A Letter From My Pastor

Today Pastor Sean, our pastor sent out this email. I wanted to post it here because he makes a few really good points. And for more reading on this subject, check out the book Case for a Creator by Lee Strobel. Here's the email:

My friends,
If you have wondered if you are really living in a post-modern, anti-god world just open Google today and click on their little picture above the search box. What you will see is the celebration or commemoration of Charles Darwin's 200th birthday-February 12, 1809
One of the largest Internet associated corporations is promoting the acknowledgment of someone's birthday, Charles Darwin a man who denied the biblical account of creation and suggested an untenable alternative-man came from monkeys.
Pause for just a moment and consider the number of people in hell because of the influence of this man who convinced them that there wasn't a God.  Darwin's unbelief and alternative philosophy is not compatible with the Word of God-to suggest otherwise is to deny the faith.
Christians are called upon to contend for the faith, and this begins with the presupposition that there is a God who has revealed Himself to mankind in special way through a trustworthy book-the Bible.  Anything other than that is a lie from the pit of hell designed to confuse and destroy.
Christians are often intimidated by intellectuals who present themselves as having all the answers. Be aware.  These intellectuals do not have all the answers; they live in darkness, seeking to know the truth. The god of this world has blinded them from the truth, and their only hope is the mercy of God that can shine a light into the depths of a dark heart and reveal the truth.
One canNOT serve two masters, and a Christian cannot have a partial biblical worldview-evolution is completely incompatible with the Word of God-do not be deceived into believing that parts of the Bible can be true.
God created Adam as an adult male instantaneously, or the entire Bible is untrustworthy and Christianity is one large hoax-there isn't an alternative or a lukewarm middle ground. Do not be deceived into thinking that one can play both sides of a court. You can no more be a Duke fan and a Carolina fan than you can subscribe to Darwinism and the Word of God.
Serve God, believe the Bible, trust in Christ and you will never regret those decisions.
See you at church.
Your pastor,

And yeah, I did go to google.com and did click on the picture above the search box. And it was all about Darwin. Do you think at Christmastime they posted a picture that would link you to information about Christ?

I have to disagree with him on "Do not be deceived into thinking that one can play both sides of a court. You can no more be a Duke fan and a Carolina fan than you can subscribe to Darwinism and the Word of God."

Who's to say that the beginning of the world was not made and then everything else was left to develop on its own? The seed planted for evolution to take its course so to speak?
There really is no way to prove it wasn't. While there is a lot of proof that Darwinism actually is very much real.
So do people have to close their eyes to evidence instead of incorporating and learning from it? To learn, evolve and understand more?

It might be the agnostic in me, but I find it very arrogant of humans to judge and condemn.
Especially, since if there is a higher power, we as inherently flawed humans will automatically perceive everything it does or doesn't do through flawed eyes.
How can we think we know it all and have it all figured out, if we can not see the big picture and evaluate accordingly?

I really wish both sides would step back from their black/white view of the world. Humans are never just one or the other, but always both, so why should religion be any different?

don't get me wrong, I respect his and other people's opinion, I just wish for more understanding and open minds.
And now I will get off my soap box :)

Thanks Mara for the well-thought-out reply! Darwinism is very much believed to be real, and scientific, I think mostly because people have a hard time accepting that there is a higher power, someOne who created us. I used to be pretty much atheist, and I couldn't stand the thought of worshiping anything, or anyone. Then I took a step back and started doing some real studying. I found out that most of what Darwin claimed as science was really just his way of justifying his beliefs. Most of the "evidence" that is used to support Darwinism has been determined to be false, or just made up. Of course they don't put that in the textbooks. But most people believe that if a scientist claims to have done all these tests and come to a conclusion based on those tests, then he must be right. Even if his conclusion really wasn't based on the outcome of the tests and he just didn't tell anyone that part. Honestly, from a scientific approach, Case for a Creator is a really great read. Lee Strobel goes very in depth into Darwinism, from the perspective of someone who used to whole-heartedly believe in it. He interviewed scientists and included so much information in that book, it's very thorough and informative, not Christian propaganda at all.

I can't deny the work God has done in my life, and sometimes I hear myself say these things, and I see myself writing these things, and I'm astounded. I never really thought I'd be this nuts about Jesus. :) It's a pretty great feeling. I don't have everything figured out, and I am flawed, but I trust that God had wisdom enough to make sure His Word has been preserved. I don't have to view things through my flawed eyes when I have that to refer to. In order to say that I trust and love God, I have to trust that His Word is kinda like the manual for how to live my life. In that sense it's pretty black and white. At least for me. :) And I love that you replied to my post, thanks for reading it! :D
